1 Dead In Early Morning Cambridge Apartment Fire; 15 Left Homeless

One person is dead, and more than a dozen are without homes to begin the new year after an early morning fire in Cambridge burned through an apartment complex, officials said.

The blaze began just after 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at a four-story Chester Street apartment building, state fire officials said. Investigators believe the fire started in a second-floor apartment at the front left of the building.

The body of the occupant was found inside. Authorities have not released their name pending family notification.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 5:15 a.m., the State Fire Marshal said. A firefighter was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from battling the blaze.

Some residents told WCVB that they heard an explosion before the fire began.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

Fifteen residents of the apartments were displaced.
